A Poem: to my son
Like Minds
-to my son-

In a horror movie we are watching where an exorcism removes the voice of a demon from a woman’s mind
I say
aren’t you glad we don’t have someone telling us what to do in our heads?
to which you reply
you mean you don’t?
and I realize that not only
are you correct
that I do have voices that
talk in my head
but I realize how similar our minds really are
and not only that
because you do not talk to me
I had not thought until now that the long ramblings that I verbalize because I can not hold them in my head any longer
could be going on in your mind
and the reason you turn away from mine
is because you have your own
to contend with

after another week of the fighting of the tangled rubbered band thoughts of voices in my head,
my brain filling with them
spilling over as I drive to see you
across the gymnasium
away from my house
empty of you
